Rise of the Guardians: A Review (2012)
Reviews of films
DreamWorks’ Rise of the Guardians follows the legendary figure Jack Frost on a quest of self-discovery, based on William Joyce’s The Guardians of Childhood book series and a short film called The Man in the Moon. I’ve watched this film previously and like it, but I’ve never understood the intense Tumblr cult around the character of Jack. It wasn’t my favorite animated film of the year, but it had a certain charm about it that reminded me of the classic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. Rise of the Guardians, like other DreamWorks animated films, boasts an outstanding cast of voice actors and a beautiful musical soundtrack. Is Rise of the Guardians a hidden gem, or did it fade away for a reason? Let’s take a closer look.
In Rise of the Guardians, an amnesiac Jack Frost (Chris Pine) wanders the streets, bewildered and unnoticed by the mortals. He gives pleasure to youngsters 300 years later by creating snow days and bringing them on sled rides. He terrorizes Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin) and the Easter Bunny in his spare time (Hugh Jackman). Meanwhile, the Man in the Moon informs Santa that the Boogeyman, Pitch Black (Jude Law), is on the loose. The Guardians of Childhood, including a new member, the hesitant Jack, are summoned by Santa.
Rise of the Guardians succeeds in instilling in its characters and viewers a sense of childlike wonder. The world-building around characters like the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and Santa Claus is endlessly inventive, both physically and in terms of the text. Rise of the Guardians has nothing in common with the Rankin/Bass specials in terms of tone and visuals, but it seems that the same motivations drove its makers. There is no particular holiday in Rise of the Guardians, and neither the Sandman nor the Tooth Fairy are connected with one. What recalls me of those old shows is the film’s attempt to give these characters a human aspect with a history. Jack Frost (1979) and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town come to mind.
Alexandre Desplat’s original soundtrack for Rise of the Guardians is nothing short of amazing. The quirky tunes complemented the images and subject matter wonderfully. Desplat succeeds in generating emotions of uneasiness and worry when the music becomes gloomy and ominous to represent the Boogeyman’s terror. Rise of the Guardians’ cast is mainly excellent. Because of his Russian accent, Alec Baldwin’s voice is indistinguishable as Santa Claus. It’s perfect for this rendition of the character. This is my favorite of his DreamWorks roles because he really immerses himself in it. Both Makunga in Madagascar 2 and The Boss Baby have Baldwin portraying himself, at least in the form we’re familiar with. One of the greatest characters in the film is Santa Claus. He succeeds as a fresh, new take on a familiar character while also connecting with our emotions about him as youngsters. Hugh Jackman also had a great performance as the Easter Bunny. He’s odd, he’s hilarious, and he’s not at all what you’d anticipate. I really hope we got to see more of this guy and the Warren, where he lives.
I’m sure it’s obvious that I enjoyed Rise of the Guardians. I like it and am happy I rewatched it, but it is far from flawless. As the Tooth Fairy, Isla Fisher is adequate. She doesn’t have much speech, but she doesn’t seem to have been given as much consideration as Santa or the Easter Bunny. Her character design is fantastic, as is her beautiful castle. Although the way they slobber over Jack is neither humorous nor charming, I enjoy the concept of her assistance fairies. The Sandman is endearing, but he never makes an emotional connection. I appreciate his design and how he uses sand to communicate; that’s smart. And with so many people in the forefront, I believe it’s only natural for one of them to be deafeningly quiet. If there was a stronger emotional throughline with one or more of the protagonists, I wouldn’t worry as much if he seemed like an afterthought, but that isn’t the case.
The connection between Jack and Pitch is my greatest issue with Rise of the Guardians. They’re both miscast, for starters. Chris Pine and Jude Law are both great actors, but they aren’t right for these parts. Law never fully conveys the hatred behind Pitch, and Jack Frost appears too young for Chris Pine’s voice. I don’t completely blame the actors since their performances aren’t bad in isolation. They’re a little dull, but I don’t believe the language or character designs helped them. The Boogeyman’s appearance is unremarkable and unthreatening. He’s simply a man dressed up as a Marilyn Manson fan, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. They could have done something smart with this, such as demonstrating how the Boogeyman seems to be a normal person until it’s too late. If you don’t believe in or fear him, he may seem to be nothing. But it isn’t the film’s point of view; this character is just dull and adds very nothing to the story. As a consequence, Rise of the Guardians has a low-stakes vibe about it. Also, because the Man in the Moon chooses the Guardians, I can’t help but wonder whether Pitch was selected in the same way. Is it in his blood to terrify youngsters and be thrashed by Santa and his henchmen? Perhaps the Man in the Moon is the actual evil guy; something to consider. Jack doesn’t fare as poorly as Pitch, but his connections with the other characters are shaky, and he receives some cringe-worthy language. He advises to trust what the Moon tells you since it instructed him to be a Guardian in the last sentence, which is simply awful. The film needed a larger emotional reward at the end to tie everything together, and this isn’t it.
Rise of the Guardians has a lot going for it, but it also has a lot going against it. The cast is diverse, with Santa proving to be the most memorable. For their fights to seem important, Jack and Pitch should have a closer connection. Both of them are afraid of being forgotten, and I believe the authors should have explored this more. The animation also has a mix of excellent artwork, such as Tooth’s castle, and poor character designs. The human children’s designs, in particular, have a lot to be desired. Set-ups for a nonexistent sequel, such as Tooth’s love on Jack, are also tedious to endure. However, when this film gets it right, it’s really breathtaking. The settings are stunning and very detailed, the musical soundtrack is beautiful, and the film’s idea is commendable.
