With its upcoming slate of upcoming movies, Warner Bros. has decided to make an aggressive push into the future. With the help of HBO Max, the studio will be releasing its entire (and growing) movie lineup in 2024. There will be an average of one full-length movie released every other week throughout the year, starting in early February. There will be no month-long gaps between movies, since each will be released within two weeks of each other.
Warner Bros hasn’t had much luck with their movies lately. After the critical and commercial failure of J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” last year, their 2024 line-up is looking pretty weak. Sure, they have the Aquaman movie coming out, but that’s not enough to save the rest of the lineup. Here’s the lineup Warner Bros has lined up for the next five years, both in theatres and HBO Max:
Warner Bros has announced plans to release 10 films in 2024, including the superhero sequel “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice”. “Justice League” is also planned for release, but its release date has yet to be announced. The studio has confirmed that the films will be released theatrically, on HBO Max, and on Netflix.
Isn’t it true that Warner Bros. understands how to deliver a bombshell?
It was only Wonder Woman 1984 last month, but soon the full year-round lineup will be available on HBO Max.
Much like the Wonder Woman release format, each film will be available on HBO Max for a month before leaving and continuing its full run in theatres. Films you can expect to see here are The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In the Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Reminiscence, Malignant, Dune, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, Cry Macho and Matrix 4.
This new hybrid approach, according to Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO of WanerMedia Studios and Networks Group, and WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, “was developed as a strategic reaction to the effect of the continuing worldwide epidemic.”
“We came to the decision that this was the best approach for WarnerMedia’s motion picture business to traverse the next 12 months after evaluating all available alternatives and the anticipated condition of moviegoing into 2024,” Kilar said in a statement. “More significantly, we aim to deliver 17 incredible films to customers throughout the year, giving them the freedom to choose how they want to see them. Unless it’s lying on a shelf, unnoticed, our material is very important. We think that taking this strategy benefits our viewers, helps exhibitors and filmmakers, and improves the HBO Max experience for everyone.”
“No one wishes for movies to return to the big screen more than we do. We recognize that fresh material is vital to theatrical exhibition, but we must balance this with the fact that most theaters in the United States will most certainly run at lower capacity until 2024,” stated Sarnoff. “With this one-year strategy, we can provide a consistent stream of world-class films to our exhibition partners while also providing moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to return to the cinemas the opportunity to watch our incredible 2024 titles. We view it as a win-win situation for both moviegoers and exhibitors, and we’re thankful to our filmmaking partners for collaborating with us on this creative solution to the situation.”
The unexpected decision, according to Warner Bros. Pictures Group chief operating officer Carolyn Blackwood, is just a temporary strategy for 2024. In the midst of major market shifts and the uncertainty of what will happen to the industry in the next year, the studio is just searching for innovative answers. “With the goods, we have to encourage exhibition,” Blackwood added. “We don’t believe we’re going to change the economics of these films any more than the epidemic did. With HBO Max, we’re introducing another interval and time for revenue.”
To be sure, no one can anticipate how Warner’s decision will impact revenues for these films, but it will be fascinating to watch how it affects exhibition, other streaming services, and, of course, competing studios. It’s also unclear how theaters would respond to the news and whether or not admission prices will alter. Last but not least, it raises the question of if other studios, like as Disney, would follow HBO Max’s example and put all of their material (Marvel and all) on Disney+. If one thing is certain, the year 2024 will be a fascinating one for the film business.
