Who is Elaine Marsh-Morton?

Elaine Marsh-Morton is a woman who was kidnapped, held captive, and physically and verbally abused by her own father for 12 years, until she was rescued. This case has captured the attention of media throughout the world, but also in the UK, where it sparked much discussion about the rights of children in the family, the rights of the family to control their children, and the right of children to be protected from abuse.

Elaine Marsh-Morton (Lady Victim) was born in London to an aristocratic family in the late 1970s. By the age of 18, Elaine had become the youngest member of the Royal Ballet. During her time there, Elaine met and fell in love with Arthur Morten, a wealthy baron. She gave birth to their daughter, but her marriage to Arthur was never legally dissolved.

Lady Vic is the title of the new Titans episode, and it’s no surprise who the new character is. While Jason and Professor Crane are still on the loose, the latter enlists the assistance of an assassin for hire, Lady Victim (or Lady Vic for short), played by Kimberly-Sue Murray: nothing out of the ordinary here, except that this particular assassin has a history with Dick and Barbara, who will not be pleased to see her again. Lady Vic is an old friend of Dick’s, as well as a number of other heroes, in the comics. Let’s have a look at it together.

Born in England, Lady Elaine Marsh-Morton was the heiress of an ancient and decorated line of brave soldiers and ruthless mercenaries, all warriors who had amounted a fortune in their work… and Elaine was the one who risked to see all that fortune disappear, due to the changes of a more and more complex world, and to the lack of liquidity his family had left her with. Despite her many treasured heirlooms and the huge family estate, in fact, the Marsh-Mortons weren’t what they used to be and, impoverished, they risked to lose everything they had. It was up to Lady Elaine to find a solution, so she dedicated herself to the family tradition: while she appeared to be a regular English socialite, with her manservant Bivens always by her side and her Darjeeling tea never too far away, she was constantly training to become a formidable assassin, so that she would have been able to cover the enormous expense of her family estate avoiding to lose it. The market for killers knew no crisis, and Elaine, who renamed herself Lady Victim in honor of her targets (even if she preferred the shorter “Lady Vic”), always found a new contractor. Once, she was hired by one of the top mobsters of Blüdhaven, Antonio “Angel” Marin, for a hit: she did her job, but when she came back, Marin was nowhere to be found. Lady Vic tracked downed Marin’s lawyer and her direct contractor, Maxwell Reed, to be paid, but when the man refused, she took his baby daughter Maxine hostage, threatening to kill her… something she would most likely have done, if the city’s protector Nightwing had not intervened. Marin, however, had left a huge gap in power, filled by Blockbuster: the new boss was looking for muscle, and he sent his man Soames to recruit her. Apparently, Lady Vic had now an exclusivity clause with the new kingpin of Blüdhaven.

Working for Blockbuster turned out to be as profitable as she had been promised, and despite her many run-ins with Nightwing and his pals, she always managed to collect enough money to maintain her lifestyle, and her properties. Sometimes, however, even she failed: she wasn’t able to track down Oracle, the mysterious helper who provided the city’s vigilantes with unlimited intel on anything and anyone, and she didn’t even locate Gorilla City in Africa to find a new heart for her dying boss. Most of all, she failed to kill Tarantula, Blockbuster’s newest ally, who had disobeyed a direct order from the boss and had to be executed… but the other assassin proved to be quicker on the draw, and Lady Vic was shot in the stomach and left to die. As Tarantula eventually killed Blockbuster, Lady Vic found herself unemployed… but not for long, as she was first recruited by (a fake) Lex Luthor in his Secret Society of Super Villains, and later by Doctor Psycho and Cheshire, who were forming a squad to target the Secret Six. For the latter gig, she was partnered with the duo of former circus acrobats Double Dare, and was assigned to kill Deadshot: the three assassins tracked the man in Gotham City, in a park… in his civilian disguise, as he was walking with his wife Michelle and his child Zoe. Having Deadshot unarmed was a treat, and the three easily overpowered him… until Michelle threw a gun at him, and at that point, Earth‘s greatest marksman easily defeated all the three assailants. Normally, this would have meant the end for them, but Deadshot didn’t want to kill someone in front of his baby daughter, and let them flee. With a new mission botched, Lady Vic needed money, so she immediately jumped on the train when Bane and Jeannette offered her a contract to star in their version of the Secret Six: if she survived the missions, there would have been an awful lot of money for her…

Lady Elaine Marsh-Morton is a smart and educated lady who was born into the upper class and is determined to stay there… even if it involves murdering a large number of people, including little children, in order to maintain her lifestyle. Lady Victim is one of the world’s most skilled assassins, a skilled martial artist who wields a wide range of weapons from swords to guns, with a preference for exotic weapons like a pair of Indian Katar, a Japanese katana, or a Maasai javelin, all of which are heirlooms from her family’s colonial past. Lady Vic is a self-described workaholic who urgently needs the money from her job… a job that typically includes mass murder. She is merciless and has the drive to (literally) leap out of an aircraft without a parachute to find her target.
